Fish Health and Fisheries, Implications for Stock Assessment and Management: The Mediterranean Example

Although fish health may influence key population-level processes, particularly those dealing with natural mortality, reproduction and growth, which in turn affect stock productivity, there has been little emphasis on the links between fish health and management of marine fisheries. This paper addresses this gap and illustrates how knowledge of fish health provides insight to marine fisheries biologists, stock assessment modellers and managers. Do macrophage centres in freshwater fishes reflect the differences in water quality?

Abstract Macrophage centres have been considered as a potentially useful indicator of fish health. In this histological work we tested this hypothesis with macrophage centres (MCs) in the spleen, the liver and the hematopoietic part of the kidney of two common freshwater fish species in Finland, perch ( Perca fluviatilis ) and roach ( Rutilus rutilus ). Samples were collected over 5 seasons from a system of 4 lakes providing a gradation in water quality. The mean number of MCs/mm 2 and the area covered (μm 2 /mm 2 ) by them differed between individual fish, species, organs, and lakes, with interactions amongst these factors. Studying the sublethal effects of catch-and-release (C&R) is challenging, as there are several potential sources of bias. For example, if behavioural alterations immediately after the release event are to be studied, separation of tagging effects from actual C&R effects is required, which is a challenge in the wild, particularly in marine environments.
